Phase I Orthodontics

Phase 1 Treatment, also known as Early Intervention Treatment, is a focused orthodontic approach designed to address specific issues that may be present in a child’s growing mouth, and jaw. It’s not about straightening the teeth but rather guiding the growth and development of the jaws to accommodate incoming permanent teeth and guiding more ideal growth of the orofacial structures.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children have an Orthodontic evaluation by 7 years of age. This is because approximately 60% of a child's facial development takes place before age 6. By age 12, nearly 90% of their facial growth is complete. It's important to identify and correct problems early so that their orofacial anatomy can be optimized for ideal growth patterns. Early exams and interventions are key!

Benefits of Phase I Orthodontics

  • Prevents Future Complications: By addressing orthodontic issues early on, we can avoid more severe problems in the future that could require extractions or surgery.

  • Guides Growth: Early treatment helps guide ideal jaw growth and correct bite problems.

  • Reduces Risk of Tooth Decay: Crowded or crooked teeth are harder to brush and floss, leading to cavities and tooth decay. Early orthodontic treatment can help ensure teeth are properly spaced for better oral hygiene and easier care.

  • Creates More Space: Early treatment can help manage space in the mouth so that when new teeth come in, there is enough room for them.

  • Shortens Treatment Time: If orthodontic treatment is needed later in life, early intervention can often reduce the time required for braces.

  • Improves Speech and Eating Abilities: Misaligned teeth or jaws can cause difficulties with speech and eating. Early treatment can help correct these issues and improve overall oral function.

  • Better Self-Confidence: Straight teeth can boost a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Everyone deserves a smile that they can be proud of, making them feel their best!
